Two Royal Oman Police (ROP) officers were killed and two others were injured when their patrol vehicle collided with a stray camel in the Wilayat of Maqshan, Dhofar Governorate, authorities confirmed.
The circumstances leading to the fatal crash are currently being investigated as reports of camel-related crashes rose in recent months in Oman.
Maqshan, a remote wilayat in Dhofar known for its desert landscapes and scattered villages, rely on camel herding for its subsistence.
Stray camels often roam freely across grazing lands and near towns, with recent rains and greenery drawing them closer to major highways, creating dangers during dawn and evening hours when visibility is poor.
One motorist was killed in a camel collision, while another sustained serious injuries in a separate crash in Al Sabiqi over the last year.
The Dhahirah Municipality has since intensified efforts to capture stray camels and urged owners to take greater responsibility for their livestock to prevent further tragedies.
