A seven-year-old Palestinian girl who escaped Gaza to Egypt died from rabies after being bitten by a dog, causing widespread grief and anger.
Jouri Mohamed Abu Awad managed to escape the ongoing conflict in Gaza with her four siblings and mother after her father was killed in an Israeli airstrike.
The family ended up on the outskirts of Cairo but was separated when the mother had to travel abroad for medical treatment.
During that time, Jouri endured a dog bite which infected her with rabies—one of the most treatable infectious illnesses—and she never received the free rabies shot that Egypt provides.
The infection spread and her condition deteriorated, and she eventually succumbed to cardiac arrest due to complications from the illness.
