Policemen in the San Francisco Bay Area, US, were astonished as they pulled over a car that made an illegal U-turn in front of them, only to find no driver behind the wheel.
Police officers pulled over a Waymo driverless taxi for making an illegal U-turn at a traffic light while they were conducting a driving under influence (DUI) enforcement operation.
“That's right… no driver, no hands, no clue,” read the caption posted by the department on social media on Saturday.
Police said since there was no human driver, a ticket could not be issued, saying their citation books “don't have a box for 'robot'.”
Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, was contacted by officers.
A spokesperson for Waymo told CBS News that they are “looking into this situation and are committed to improving road safety through our ongoing learnings and experience.”
