A 310-year-old long-lost Spanish treasure worth an estimated $1 million (BD376,964) was just discovered off the coast of Florida.
The treasure, which consists of more than 1,000 silver and gold coins, was discovered by a team of specialist divers in a stretch of water commonly known as the “Treasure Coast”.
The coins are believed to have been minted in the Spanish colonies of Bolivia, Mexico, and Peru and were headed back to Spain on a fleet of ships in 1715, when a hurricane spilled the loot into the sea.
The discovery was made by Queen Jewels, a maritime salvage company. Sal Guttoso from Queen Jewels said, “This discovery is not only about the treasure itself but the stories it tells.”
“Each coin is a piece of history—a tangible link to the people who lived, worked, and sailed during the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire.”
“Finding 1,000 of them in a single recovery is both rare and extraordinary.”
The company uses underwater metal detectors and waterproof fans to comb the sea floor.
