TENNIS – Bahrain’s Ali Alkhayyat advanced to the boys’ singles round of 16 yesterday in the Bahrain ATF 16U, which got underway at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.
Alkhayyat was a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 winner against Sultan Alyami from Saudi Arabia to push through to the next stage.
There, he will take on Jayden Rebello from Australia, who battled past Bahrain’s Abdulrahman Al Doseri 0-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) in their first round contest.
Other Bahrainis taking victories yesterday were Hashim Altoobli, Redha Hasan, and Adam Bokhowa.
Altoobli beat Salman Alyami from Saudi 6-1, 7-5; Hasan was leading 6-2, 3-0 when his opponent Hamzah Sorour from Egypt retired; and Bokhowa edged past Kadhem Al from Saudi Arabia 6-4, 6-4 to go through.
Altoobli will next play second-seeded Brazilian Daniel Carvalho, Hasan will take on fourth seed Ahmad Sarouji from Saudi, and Bokhowa will next face off with fifth seed Parth Sane from India.
The Bahrain ATF 16U is the first of two successive Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) competitions for this age group that will be held in the kingdom.
This event continues until Friday, after which another tournament will be held from Saturday to October 17.
Bahrain’s Ahmed Alsayed is the top seed in the boys’ singles draw, while Bahraini Salma Faragallah is the number one seed in the girls’ singles.
