Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi said yesterday that a two-state solution was the only way to achieve the ambitions of the Palestinians and the Israelis and live in peace as the Gaza peace summit kicked off with US President Donald Trump co-chairing the event.
Al Sisi said that his country would host a conference on the reconstruction of Gaza following a deal for a ceasefire and hostage-prisoner exchange.
“Egypt will work with the US in co-ordination with partners in the coming days to lay the foundation for the reconstruction of the (Gaza) Strip, and we intend to host an early recovery, reconstruction and development conference,” he said.
Trump praised Al Sisi as the two leaders appeared together before an international summit on the Gaza deal.
“He played a very important role. I appreciate it very much,” Trump said of Al Sisi, whom he called as a powerful leader who keeps crime down in his country.
Meanwhile, Al Sisi told his US counterpart that he was the “only one” who could bring peace to the Middle East.
“I was sure you were the only one, Mr President, who can end this war... the only one capable of bringing peace to our region,” Al Sisi said of Trump in a joint appearance as more than two dozen world leaders waited for them to start a Gaza summit.
Trump landed in Egypt aboard Air Force One. The leader arrived in the resort town of Sharm el Sheikh where more than two dozen heads of state, government and international organisations were expecting him, following a lightning visit to Israel.
Egypt’s President held a meeting on the sidelines of the summit with the presidents of France and Türkiye, and Qatar’s Amir and others to help co-ordinate the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire and reconstruction efforts for the enclave, according to a statement by the Egyptian President’s office.
