CAMEL RACING – Bahraini's Zainab Abdulwahed and Alanood Kamal narrowly missed out on the podium yesterday as camel racing made its historic debut in the third Asian Youth Games in the kingdom.
Abdulwahed and Kamal placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the girls’ 500 metres individual sprint race. Competing on her camel Baroud, Abdulwahed finished the race in 49 seconds – just four seconds behind gold-medallist Latifa Mohammed Amer Alashkhari from the UAE, who was riding Hasheem. Kamal was six seconds behind the winner on her camel Al Bahrain.
The silver-medallist one second behind Alashkhari was fellow-Emirati Aisha Alsaadi riding Sarab, while Imaan Mohammed Salem from Yemen bagged bronze on Thameen, also a second behind.
Meanwhile, in the boys’ 500m individual sprint race, Bahrain’s Faisal Almoammari on his camel Siaf came fifth and Hamdan Almoammari on Shaheen was 12th.
Faisal crossed the finish line five seconds behind gold-medallist Mohammed Umair Al Rashedi from the UAE riding Ghantoot, who won in 45 seconds.
Khalifa Alghfeli made it an Emirati one-two on Al Garm, with a similar finishing time.
Wasmi Sultan Albalawi from Saudi Arabia took bronze three seconds adrift on Al Khaleej.
Hamdan completed the event 22 seconds behind the victor.
