Two Indian nurses on their first flight to the UAE to begin new jobs saved the life of a fellow passenger who went into cardiac arrest.
Abhijith Jees and Ajeesh Nelson, both from the Indian state of Kerala, were traveling on an Air Arabia flight from Kochi to Abu Dhabi, when they heard a faint gasp from a passenger seated behind them, who then slumped over in his seat.
Jees immediately checked the man’s pulse and recognised that he was in cardiac arrest. His medical training kicked in, and he began performing CPR while alerting the crew.
Nelson quickly joined in, and the two worked in co-ordination, performing two rounds of CPR until the man regained consciousness.
“There was no panic,” Nelson said. “We just focused on what had to be done.”
They continued to monitor the passenger’s condition, along with a doctor on board, until the plane landed in Abu Dhabi.
Response Plus Medical, their new employer, praised the young nurses for their swift and professional response.
The company chief executive officer Dr Rohil Raghavan said Ajeesh and Abhijith "have shown the true spirit of RPM by saving a patient outside the hospital environment.”
The passenger was reported to be stable after receiving treatment from the airport medical team.
