FOOTBALL – BAHRAIN’S clubs Muharraq and Al Khaldiya suffered narrow defeats last night in their latest matches in the AFC Champions League (ACL) Two.
Nasser bin Hamad Bahrain Premier Football League title holders Muharraq, who were reduced to 10 men, were handed a 1-2 setback to Al Wehdat of Jordan at King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman.
Edimar Ribeiro da Costa Junior put the Bahrainis in front with a 33rd-minute goal, but Mostafa Moawad brought the game back on level terms in the opening minute of first-half stoppage time. Wehdat’s Amer Jamous then scored with a right-footed shot inside the area for the decisive strike that earned the Jordanians their first points on the Group A standings.
Muharraq suffered their second loss in a row and stayed on six points.
Meanwhile, Khaldiya lost to Al Ahli of Qatar 1-2 in their Group B clash last night, played at the Late Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa Stadium in Arad.
Driss Fettouhi put the visitors in front with a goal in the 65th minute, but Khaldiya’s Mohammed Al Rumaihi equalised just nine minutes later with a header from the centre of the box. But Ahli found their winner on the stroke of full time, when Sekou Yansane fired in from the centre of the area to give Ahli the full three points.
With the loss, Khaldiya dropped to second on their table with five points, while Ahli went top with six.
Both Muharraq and Khaldiya are back in action on Wednesday next week when Muharraq face Al Wasl FC of the UAE in Dubai and Khaldiya take on PFC Andijon of Uzbekistan at home.
