FUTSAL – IRAN clinched the girls’ futsal gold medals last night in the third Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
The Iranians were crowned champions following a nail-biting 3-2 penalty shootout win against China. The Iranians’ first two attempts were saved as they fell behind 0-2. But Tanaz Bagheri and Nargas Amirmohseni both fired in to level it at 2-2, and after Wenjing Tong hit the crossbar, Setayesh Rezaeisalahi converted the winner in a tense conclusion.
The game was goalless at the end of regular time, setting the stage for the penalty kicks.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei claimed the bronze medals with a 6-1 win against Hong Kong in the match for third place.
Four different players were on target for Chinese Taipei, with both Yu-xuan Hou and Hsuan Ku registering a brace apiece. Their other goals were scored by Jung-chia Hsu and Wun-jia Shen.
Oi Ling Chan fired in Hong Kong’s lone consolation.
Presenting the medallists their awards during last night’s podium ceremonies were Bahrain Football Association board member Shaikh Salman bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Gulf Air Group CEP Jeffrey Goh, and the third Asian Youth Games’ executive committee chairman Yusuf Duaij Muhoorfi.
