ISLAMIC SOLIDARITY GAMES – BAHRAIN’S senior men’s volleyball national team captain Naser Anan and table tennis national team player Dana Al Khayyat were last night named as the flag-bearers for the kingdom’s delegation in tonight’s opening ceremony of the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The inauguration will be taking place at Al Janadriyah Racecourse in the Saudi capital, and Bahrain will be represented by around 40 athletes, led by Anan and Al Khayyat, the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) announced yesterday.
Members of the kingdom’s contingent participated in the teams’ welcome ceremony last night at the athletes’ village, located at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University.
The event was attended by BOC board member and Bahrain Weightlifting Federation president Eshaq Ebrahim Eshaq, BOC Arab and international relations head Maryam Mardana, who is also the delegation director in Riyadh, and other officials.
Bahrain’s delegation in this year’s Islamic Solidarity Games features 182 members, from which 102 are athletes, including 73 men and 29 women. They are amongst 5,000 sportsmen and women representing 57 countries in the event, which is scheduled to continue until November 21.
The Bahrainis are competing in nearly 20 of the event’s 23 sports, including athletics, Para athletics, 3x3 basketball, handball, volleyball, camel racing, duathlon, equestrian showjumping, esports, shooting, jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, Muay, weightlifting, table tennis, wrestling, and Para powerlifting.
The Islamic Solidarity Games stand as the third-largest multi-sport event worldwide, following only the Olympic Games and the Asian Games. The previous edition was held in 2022 in Konya, Türkiye, where Bahrain’s delegation came away with an impressive 23-medal haul, including nine gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals. That placed them eighth overall amongst the 44 nations on the final medal table.
