TRIATHLON – Bahrain triathlon team athletes flew the kingdom’s flag high in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, held in Marbella, Spain.
Four of their members completed the race’s gruelling course, which included a 1.9-kilometre swim, followed by a 90km bike ride, and concluding with a 21.1km run.
The event featured strong competition with a large presence of international participants, exceeding 6,300 men’s and women’s competitors representing 114 countries from around the world, including elite triathletes.
Competing for Bahrain were Shaikh Saqer bin Salman Al Khalifa, Mai Al Haji, Fahad Ali, and Ahmed Al Mansouri, who delivered commendable performances and overcame the challenges of the competition.
Al Haji received special praise from the event’s organising committee, who commended her honourable role in achieving outstanding results and encouraging Bahraini and Gulf triathletes to take up the sport.
Al Haji commented on this honour, saying: “This praise is not just a personal appreciation, but a message of hope and inspiration to every Bahraini and Gulf woman who aspires to achieve the impossible.
“We are capable of competing at the highest international levels, and I hope that our performance today will be an incentive for more girls to take on the triathlon experience.”
The Bahraini triathletes expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the wise leadership, to His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and to SCYS first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa for their continuous and unwavering support for sports and athletes.
