ISLAMIC SOLIDARITY GAMES – Bahrain completed an unbeaten run yesterday in the preliminary round of the men’s 3x3 basketball tournament in the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games.
After beating Egypt and hosts Saudi Arabia in their opening Group A games on Monday, the nationals won via walkover last night against Algeria.
The Bahraini quartet of Sayed Mohammed Hameed, Mohammed Buallay, Milos Supica, and Bogdan Dragovic therefore head into today’s concluding day of 3x3 action amongst the favourites to step onto the podium. They next take on the runners-up of Group B in the semi-finals, which will be followed by gold and bronze medal games later this evening. Group B is composed of Qatar, Iran, Türkiye, and Ivory Coast.
Elsewhere yesterday in this year’s Islamic Solidarity Games, Bahrain’s Faisal Almoammari advanced to the men’s 2,000 metres medal round in camel racing.
Riding his camel Al Shababi, Almoammari finished fourth in the first of two heats in a time of three minutes 26.076 seconds.
He was 10.878 seconds behind race winner Ahmed Aljohni from Saudi Arabia, riding Shaheen.
Almoammari is one of 12 competitors set for the final, which will be held tomorrow at 3.30pm.
Bahrain’s other competitor in the men’s 2,000m in camel racing, Mohammed Alaamri riding Jabbar, did not finish the second heat yesterday.
In fencing yesterday, Bahrain’s Abdulkarim Saad and Ali Alamiri competed in the men’s foil individual competition, with Saad making it through to the quarter-finals.
Saad lost his bout in the last eight 6-15 against Khaled Hussein from Qatar.
He advanced to that stage with a 15-7 win against Abdulaziz Altuwaijri from Saudi Arabia in the last 16, after earlier winning five of his six bouts in pool two of the preliminaries.
Meanwhile, Alamiri made it to the last 16, where he lost against Ilyas Molina from Uzbekistan 4-15.
Earlier in the day, competing in pool one of the preliminary round, he won two of his six bouts, and then beat Muzammil Khan from Pakistan 15-2 in the round of 32.
On the distaff, Bahrain’s Mariam Khan lost all her bouts in the women’s epee individual competition.
