TENNIS – SOFIA Lomakina from Russia and Sara Dessouky from Egypt were yesterday crowned girls’ doubles champions in the J30 Manama Bahrain ITF Juniors Tournament, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town.
Second-seeded Sofia and Dessouky won their title after defeating top seeds Elise Virr from Australia and Riko Shozui from Japan 5-7, 7-6 (1), 10-6 in their final.
Sofia now has an opportunity to go for a title double in the kingdom after also advancing yesterday to the girls’ singles final after beating Elise 6-3, 6-0. Sofia will be taking on fellow-Russian Vera Iamina, who beat Dessouky 6-3, 6-4 in their semi-final contest yesterday.
On the distaff, Russia’s Pavel Joromsky Jr and Saudi Arabia’s Issah Ali clinched the boys’ doubles title after beating the Turkish pair of Cinar Senkaya and Yagiz Yildiz 6-3, 6-4.
Pavel then missed out on the boys’ singles final after losing to Daisuke Hashimoto from Japan 1-6, 1-6 in the semis. Daisuke will face Sergi Ramis Coll from Spain for the crown. Sergi beat Ziya Ayberk Aydin from Türkiye 7-5, 6-2 to advance.
The two singles finals will be played today on the concluding day of the tournament, which is part of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors calendar.
