Filipino domestic worker Rhodora Alcaraz is being praised for saving a baby from the Hong Kong towers fire.
Alcaraz cradled her employers' 3-month-old baby in a wet blanket while trapped for hours waiting for rescue .
Rhoda Lynn Dayo, former employer of Rhodora Alcaraz said, "people are really recognising her act of bravery. I think you know when you're in that time of desperation, you want to live, you are in survival mode, but the fact that she didn't let go of the baby even if it wasn't her own, I commend her. I'm so proud of her."
Alcaraz survived the fire but remains in hospital care
"I feel sad about her but I salute her for being so good despite the tragic incident. She did not abandon her responsibility. I hope that this will show the Hong Kong community the essence and importance of the domestic workers that even in tragic situations we will not abandon our jobs," said Lai Besana, Filipino domestic worker working in Hong Kong.
The blaze broke out at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po on November 26, trapping residents in thick smoke. Amid the chaos, 28-year-old Rhodora Alcaraz, a newly arrived domestic worker, cradled her employers' 3-month-old baby in a wet blanket while trapped in a smoke-filled room for several hours before being rescued by firefighters, her sister Raychelle Loreto told Reuters.
Alcaraz, who survived the incident but remains in the hospital, has been described by community members as a symbol of courage and compassion. Many overseas Filipinos in Hong Kong have lauded her act, calling her a “modern-day hero” and offering prayers for her recovery.
Her former employer, Rhoda Lynn Dayo, said Alcaraz had long been regarded as part of their family. She described her as hardworking and affectionate, adding that her actions during the fire reflected her character.
