BAHRAIN Olympic Committee (BOC) board member and BOC equal opportunities and gender balance in sports committee chairperson Dr Shaikha Hessa bint Khalid Al Khalifa praised the achievements of the kingdom’s medal winners at the eighth Arab Women Sports Tournament, which concluded last week in Sharjah.
The kingdom’s delegation came away with nine medals – four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.
This came during Dr Shaikha Hessa’s reception of the medal winners and officials at the BOC headquarters yesterday,
Dr Shaikha Hessa affirmed that this accomplishment is an extension of the achievements and successes attained by the sports movement in general and women’s sport in particular, with the support of His Majesty King Hamad and of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, along with the interest of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King and Supreme Council for Women president.
Bahrain’s nine medal winners were headlined by gold medallists Safa Mohamed Aldoseri, Noof Khalil Aldoseri, and Marwa Hamid Alamairi (shooting, teams’ 10m air rifle), Safa (shooting, individual 10m air rifle); Qamar Ali, Mooza Abdulrahim Ali, and Badreya Ebrahim Alatawi (shooting, teams’ 10m air pistol); and Fatema Sadeq Kalawadh (taekwondo, under-49kg).
The silver medal winners were Hanan Yusuf Alsherooqi (taekwondo, under-57kg) and Bahrain’s fencers in the teams’ epee competition; while the bronze-medallists were Qamar (shooting, individual 10m air pistol); Ritej Haithem Araoud (fencing, individual foil); and Sara Mahmood Jallab (taekwondo, under-67kg).
Bahrain were represented by a 65-strong delegation headed by director Salama Mohammed Ateeq in Sharjah, including athletes, coaches, and administrators, representing Riffa, Budaiya, Busaiteen, and Al Hala.
They were amongst 63 clubs representing 16 countries across nine sports in this year’s Arab Women Sports Tournament, which is organised by Sharjah Women’s Sports under the patronage of wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Sharjah Family and Community Council chairperson Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi.
Also competing were clubs from hosts UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Somalia.
