A recent article by Hossein Shariatmadari, editor-in-chief of Iran’s Kayhan newspaper, makes dangerous claims.
Such statements are not only historically questionable but also disregard the principles of sovereignty and self-determination upon which modern international relations are built.
The idea that a modern nation can be reclaimed through historical association is fundamentally flawed.
Bahrain’s sovereignty is neither recent nor disputed. Since the establishment of Al Khalifa rule in 1783, Bahrain has built its own political identity, institutions, and national experience.
Its status as an independent and internationally recognised state rests on history, legitimacy and the will of its people, not on the ambitions of some expansionists who look to revisit the past to distract its people from the suffering they are going through.
Bahrain’s future belongs to the people of Bahrain. Its sovereignty, identity and legitimacy are not found by claims made beyond its shores, but by the generations who have built and continue to shape this nation. No newspaper article can change that reality.
