This is in reference to the letter ‘Give courtesy a chance’ (GDN, August 21). With due respect to the writer and his views on the subject, it made me cringe.
It left a bitter taste in my mouth (no pun intended) to read and see the picture of our country folks pushing and jostling to get their hands on a food packet. Who knows, many of those jostling may have arrived at the venue early without breakfast and this could have triggered the rush? No, I’m not condoning the act of rushing and pushing but just trying to be rational.
This matter could have been immediately addressed with the organisers and/or sponsors to make an announcement to form a single file for orderly distribution. Indeed, we have a long way to go in embracing and refining socially acceptable behaviour. However, castigating our own people in the media could inadvertently tarnish the reputation of our entire community.
In any case, I am sure the organisers took a note of the mayhem and hopefully will take corrective action next time around.
