BAHRAIN’S national Olympic football team defeated their counterparts from Indonesia 1-0 yesterday in an international friendly championship being played in Jakarta.
The competition, known as the PSSI Anniversary Cup, features four teams who will battle it out in a single round-robin, including hosts Indonesia, Bahrain, North Korea and Uzbekistan.
Mohammed Marhoon fired in the game-winner for the under-23 Bahrainis. He scored in the fifth minute to give his team a wonderful start to the contest and it eventually proved to be the difference between the two sides.
The Indonesians had a total of 18 shots in the game, eight of which were on target. Bahrain had a total of 13 but only five were on target.
The home team also enjoyed most of the ball possession, having 64 per cent as compared to Bahrain’s 36 per cent.
Bahrain head coach Samir Chammam started yesterday’s match with a first 11 that featured Yousif Habeeb, Hussain Jameel, Hamad Shamsan, Ahmed Bu Ghammar, Hassan Al Karani, Abbas Al Asfoor, Jassim Khelaif, Ahmed Saleh, Abdulaziz Khalid, Sayed Hashim Isa and Marhoon.
Bahrain is next set to take on Uzbekistan in their next game scheduled for Monday.
The Uzbeks drew 2-2 with their North Korean counterparts.
The rest of the squad that is in Indonesia but did not start the first game include Anwar Ahmed, Abdulaziz Al Kandari, Hamza Al Joben, Ali Hassan, Mohammed Marhoon, Adnan Fawaz, Hassan Madan, Musab Omar, Ahmed Al Sheroogi, Yasser Mohammed, Sayed Ibrahim Alawi, Salim Hussain, Sayed Mohammed Ameen and.
The team is using this competition as part of their preparations for the upcoming 18th Asian Games, which is scheduled to take place this August to early September in Jakarta.
