Bahrain last night scored a sensational 28-26 victory over hosts Qatar in the semi-final of the Asian men's handball qualifying tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The Bahrainis led 16-15 at half-time.
Fadhul Ahmed was Bahrain's hero scoring eight goals while Ahmed Mohammed (5), Merza Ali (3), Husain Al Sayyad (3) and Eid Ali (2) were the other main contributors.
Merza Mohammed, Askani Bilal, Jasim Al Salatna and Mahdi Saad scored a goal each.
For Qatar, Allaedine Berrached top scored with seven goals while Rafael Capote (6), Ahmad Madadi (5), Abdelrahman Abdalla (2), Frankis Marzo (2), Waddi Sinen (2) and Ali Youssef (2) were the other scorers.
In the other semi-final yesterday, South Korea edged out Saudi Arabia 29-26 after leading 17-12 at half-time.
Saudi Arabia finished second in Group ‘A’ with two wins from three matches while Korea topped Group ‘B’ with two wins from three matches.
Bahrain finished second in Group 'B' with two wins.
The final is scheduled for tomorrow, starting at 6pm.
In matches for minor placings, Kuwait beat India 34-21 and Iran routed Hong Kong 48-16.
This event is the first step to making it to the 2020 Olympics. The winners of the Asian qualifiers book an automatic berth while the other teams will hope to have done enough to book a place in another series of qualifying competitions to be held in April next year.
