A PLANE passenger who tried to smuggle narcotics worth more than BD50,000 inside a book, electronic items and packets of sweets has been jailed for 15 years.
The 28-year-old Pakistani man was yesterday also fined BD5,000 by the High Criminal Court.
He was arrested at Bahrain International Airport on August 16 with half a kilo of hashish, 60 Ecstasy pills, prescription drugs, and 200gm of crystal meth (locally known as shabu).
Customs officers who intercepted the passenger at the airport discovered the drugs stashed inside his luggage including his earphones, a book and sweet packets as well as inside an iPad.
However, the defendant earlier told prosecutors he tried to smuggle the drugs into the country after buying it from a friend.
The man will be deported after completing his sentence.
