The use of freedom of expression and opinion to engage in attacks, insults and distortions of Islam and its Prophet is inconsistent with the peculiarities of others, Shaikh Adnan Al Qattan said in his Friday sermon at Al Fateh Grand Mosque.
However, Shaikh Al Qattan said while sagacious and wise people should work on addressing such behaviours that fuel sedition and hatred, they must “uphold the dignity of the mind” and defend the Prophet with strong arguments and good reasons.
“They also should endeavour to highlight the Prophet’s life, deeds and sayings based on genuine information,” the scholar said in his weekly sermon dedicated in parts to the abuses and attacks by some people in Western countries against Prophet Mohammed and to the republication of controversial cartoons of Islam and the Prophet.
Shaikh Al Qattan said that Prophet Mohammed has been described in testimonies by non-Muslim researchers and intellectuals as a highly influential and as an outstanding role model for humanity.
“The repeated insults targeting the Prophet’s life constitute a transgression of all the values and morals on which the foundations of respect for religions and beliefs are built. The Prophet’s life has been praised by luminary minds in the East and the West,” he said.
The imam stressed that Islam has prohibited attacking or deriding other religions.
