India marks its 72nd Republic Day today.
On this day in 1950 the Indian Constitution came into effect, replacing the Government of India Act as the governing document, and turning the nation into a newly-formed republic.
Even though India gained independence on August 15, 1947, the country did not have its own laws which were drafted and finally adopted in 1950.
To mark the occasion this year, a flag-hoisting ceremony will be held at the Indian Embassy complex in Seef District at 7.30am.
Ambassador Piyush Srivastava will then read a message from the Indian President.
The embassy will also virtually celebrate the occasion at 7pm.
Due to Covid-19 and prevailing local guidelines regarding social distancing norms and restrictions on large gatherings, physical participation of the members of the Indian community and friends of India in Bahrain in the celebrations would not be possible this year.
However, the embassy would be telecasting live the flag-hoisting ceremony in the morning and the virtual celebration in the evening on its social media accounts.
