His Majesty King Hamad yesterday sent a cable of congratulations to President Joseph Aoun on his election as President of Lebanon and taking the constitutional oath.
His Majesty wished President Aoun success in carrying out his responsibilities to accomplish the ambitions of the people of Lebanon and bring about progress and prosperity.
He emphasised Bahrain’s support for Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty, underscoring the strong ties between the two countries and Bahrain’s dedication to advancing them.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, sent a similar cable of congratulations to President Aoun.
Lebanon’s parliament elected the army chief head of state earlier yesterday, filling the vacant presidency with a general who has US support.
In a speech to the chamber, President Aoun, 60, vowed to work to ensure the state has the exclusive right to carry arms, drawing loud applause.
He promised to rebuild south Lebanon and other parts of the country he said had been destroyed by Israel. He also pledged to prevent Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which was mired in deep economic and political crises even before the latest conflict. “Today, a new phase in the history of Lebanon begins,” he said.
US ambassador Lisa Johnson, attending the session, said she was “very happy” with Aoun’s election.
