More than 100,000 Bahrainis, about 36 per cent of whom are females, are currently employed in the country’s private sector, according to an online employability portal.
The Private Sector Employment Overview, posted on the Employability Skills Portal (esp.bh), features data and statistics that have been provided by the Social Insurance Organisation (SIO).
On average, the median salary of a Bahraini employee in the sector is about BD450, while the median starting salary for new employees is BD400.
A total of 101,522 Bahrainis are in the private sector, 65,296 of whom are men, with 36,226 females.
Majority of the workers (20,548) are employed in wholesale and retail trade. The sector is dominated by males with 13,961 workers as opposed to 6,587 female employees.

In this sector, around 4,430 Bahrainis are employed as service and sales workers, 2,725 are labelled as technicians and associate professionals, 1,475 are clerical support workers, 1,392 are employed as plant and machine operators, 1,583 are managers, while the remaining are professionals, elementary workers and craft and trade workers.
Another influential sector is manufacturing, which employs 13,315 Bahrainis. The overwhelming majority of workers in these industries are males with 10,987 as opposed to just 2,328 females.
A total of 2,056 people in this sector are employed as technicians, 1,393 are professionals, 969 are elementary workers, 915 are service and sale employees, 800 are machine operators and the remaining are employed as craft and trade workers, clerical support and managers.
Bahrainis employed in the private healthcare sector number 3,078, with females outnumbering male workers 1,656 to 1,422. This includes around 420 general practitioners, 163 nursing professionals, 52 personal care workers, 190 dentists and 193 dental assistants and 173 pharmacists.
The education sector is also dominated by female Bahraini workers with 2,294, compared to 1,398 males.
This includes 209 primary school teachers, 56 in secondary education, 32 special needs teachers, 541 teachers’ aides, 357 university teachers and 112 vocational teachers.
As for the financial sector, 9,995 Bahrainis (6,077 males and 3,918 females) are employed.
Some occupations include accountants (3,003), finance managers (594), analysts (119), insurance (94), investment advisers (38) and bank tellers and clerks (76).
Other relevant industries include accommodation and food service with 2,681 Bahrainis (1,848 males and 833 females), 355 in the agricultural sector (270 males and 85 females), 10,413 in construction (6,980 males and 3,433 females), and 814 in the electricity and gas sector (713 males and 101 females).
In total, including citizens and expats, more than 560,000 people, are employed in private companies, most of whom are engaged in manual labour.
The vast majority of workers (182,000) are between the ages of 30 to 39, followed by 40- to 49-year-olds (127,000) and 20- to 29-year-olds (109,500).
Most of the workers are employed in wholesale and retail trade (131,600 employees) and construction with 123,000 Bahraini and expat workers.
