A government employee has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined BD41,770 by the High Criminal Court after he was found guilty of abusing his position and embezzling funds.
The court has also ordered the restitution of the same amount of money to his employer.
The defendant, whose age and nationality were not disclosed, embezzled funds by using his authority to tamper with data and information in his workplace’s electronic system.
According to the details of the case, the authorities received a complaint from the man’s employer, Gulf Aviation Academy, following a string of suspicious behaviours.
A report was filed with the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security, who forwarded the report to the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution. Authorities launched an investigation, which and audits and reviews revealed criminal suspicions.
It was discovered that the defendant embezzled funds collected from trainees on behalf of his employer and altered data and information in the academy’s electronic system to conceal evidence of his crime.
Documents were reviewed and witness testimonies were heard from relevant officials and experts. The defendant was interrogated and referred to the High Criminal Court, which issued the aforementioned ruling.
