The Mena region is projected to attract over $1 trillion in renewable energy investments by 2030, creating new industries, jobs, and opportunities for collaboration, according to Mark Thomas, group chief executive of Bapco Energies.
During his keynote address titled ‘Mena’s Driving Role in Global Climate Action and Energy Resilience’ at the third edition of Sustainability Forum Middle East, Mr Thomas emphasised the need for global co-operation in the energy transition.
“Partnerships between nations, industries, and institutions are the backbone of global climate action,” he stated at the event held under the patronage of Oil and Environment Minister and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs Dr Mohammed Bin Daina at the Crowne Plaza, Manama.
“The success of COP28 in Dubai highlighted the importance of inclusive climate finance and the need for collaboration in the energy transition. Mena can serve as a bridge between developed and developing nations, offering a collaborative model for tackling climate challenges.”
Recognising the responsibility that comes with energy leadership, Bapco Energies aligns its work with Bahrain’s national energy strategy, focusing on energy security, renewable energy integration, and decarbonisation through energy efficiency investments.
“We have invested in lowering emissions from our refinery through a $7 billion refinery modernisation project,” said Mr Thomas. “We are developing solar projects to support our upstream operations and collaborating with partners in Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia to bring large-scale renewables to the kingdom, ensuring energy remains accessible and affordable.”
Bapco Energies is also investing in future technologies, testing new applications within its assets and supporting promising startups through Bapco Ventures.
“We are empowering a new generation of Bahraini leaders in partnership with global organisations,” Mr Thomas added. “Fostering the skills and talents needed to drive sustainable innovation across Bahrain and the region.”
Mr Thomas outlined four key imperatives for the region: Firstly, responsible oil and gas production must continue as a bridge fuel. Secondly, the region must accelerate renewable energy adoption by diversifying energy sources and scaling up projects that harness the region’s abundant solar and wind resources. Thirdly, investing in technological solutions, such as AI-driven energy efficiency and advancements in storage technology, is crucial. Finally, strengthening partnerships by uniting expertise, capital, and vision is essential to transform challenges into opportunities.
“Mena’s story is no longer just one of oil and gas,” concluded Mr Thomas. “It is one of energy leadership, mobilising action and investment for climate and energy resilience. Together, we can ensure this region remains not only a hub for energy but also a beacon of sustainability for generations to come.”
