A total of 1,500 pigeons, owned by more than 50 Bahraini enthusiasts, participated in a joint 600km homing pigeons race from Hafar Al Batin, in Saudi Arabia, to Bahrain.
The joint race is the first in Bahrain for homing pigeons this year after holding three local ones in the Southern, Northern and Muharraq governorates.
Hussain Mohammed, from Damistan village, won the race, which awards the top 10 finishers, securing first and fourth places.
Sayed Abbas, from Maqaba, claimed second, sixth and eighth places while Mohammed Al Khalifa, from Jari Al-Sheikh, secured third, fifth and seventh places.
Abdulaziz Al Kaabi, from Askar, finished ninth and Ismail Al Jamri, from Bani Jamra, took the 10th spot.
Bahraini Heritage Sports Committee board member and Homing Pigeons Committee head Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Kaabi praised the tough and exciting competition despite the unsettled weather conditions.
“The diversity of winners from different areas of Bahrain reflects the widespread popularity of this traditional sport within the Bahraini society,” he said, adding that the Bahraini homing pigeons owners are preparing to participate in an international 1,000km race across the GCC countries.
