Cairo: The Association of Secretaries-General of Arab Parliaments has elected Kareema Mohammed Al Abbasi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, as a member of its Executive Committee.
The Association conducted supplementary elections for the Executive Committee, which comprises the Association’s President (Chairperson), Vice President (Deputy Chairperson), and three elected members chosen by the General Assembly for a renewable two-year term, subject to majority approval.
The meetings covered amendments to the Association’s statutes and regulations to enhance cooperation among Arab parliamentary secretariats. Elections were also held for the President and Vice President for the next term.
Al Abbasi highlighted the importance of advancing the work of parliamentary secretariats in Arab legislative councils to enhance their contributions to sustainable development.
She thanked the Association for trusting her with the Executive Committee role, seeing it as a recognition of Bahrain’s key efforts in supporting parliamentary and democratic work regionally and internationally.
She highlighted the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for the legislative authority.
Al Abbasi said Bahraini women are empowered and well-prepared for political and legislative roles. She highlighted their skills, experience, and ability to contribute to institutional development and democracy.
She highlighted the role of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Consort of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), in empowering Bahraini women and encouraging them to excel through initiatives that have facilitated their full participation in national development.
Al Abbasi said her election to the Executive Committee is an opportunity to strengthen joint parliamentary work in the Arab world by enhancing cooperation between secretariats and sharing expertise to improve performance.
She highlighted the Committee's commitment to advancing democracy and expressed her eagerness to work with all members to achieve common goals and develop parliamentary work in the region.
