A PROPOSAL for a national employment strategy is set to be discussed in Parliament on Tuesday.
A group of MPs have called for the replacement of foreign workers with Bahrainis in the public and private sectors.
They underscore the need to enhance job opportunities for citizens, reduce unemployment and achieve a balanced labour market while ensuring a gradual transition from the dependence on expat labour.
The MPs presenting the proposal have outlined several key justifications:
1. Enhancing employment opportunities for Bahrainis. The proposal seeks to ensure that Bahraini nationals have priority access to jobs, particularly in essential service sectors, thereby reducing youth unemployment.
2. Addressing the growing expat workforce. The initiative aims to curb the increasing number of foreign workers and reduce job market saturation.
3. Balancing current and future labour market needs. A strategic workforce plan is essential to meet both present and future demands of Bahrain’s labour market.
4. Gradual replacement of foreign workers. The transition will be phased to ensure a smooth and sustainable shift, preventing economic disruption.
