Bahraini housewives could be enrolled in the social insurance system.
A proposed amendment to the 1976 Social Insurance Law is aimed at providing financial security for housewives in cases of old age, disability or death.
Spearheaded by Strategic Thinking Bloc member Dr Mariam Al Dhaen, the proposal was submitted last night to Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam, who immediately forwarded it to the services committee for review.
Under the proposed law, housewives would be able to contribute to the social insurance system by paying a subscription fee equivalent to nine per cent of a self-selected monthly income category.
The government would support this by covering an additional 6pc of the contribution, ensuring a strong safety net for housewives.
Currently, Bahrain’s general pension system only covers employees in both the public and private sectors, as well as self-employed individuals.
