Two major development projects in Riffa, aimed at enhancing traffic flow and increasing road capacity, have been completed.
Works Ministry Under-Secretary Shaikh Mishal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa yesterday said the Muhazwarah and Al Hajiyat projects would boost Riffa’s infrastructure sustainability.
The announcement came during an inspection visit to the projects, attended by Southern Governorate deputy governor Brigadier Hamad Al Khayyat, Southern Municipal Council chairman Abdulla Abdullatif and General Directorate of Traffic director of operations Colonel Adel Al Dossari.
“These projects align with the government’s commitment to developing national infrastructure, improving road safety and supporting sustainable urban planning,” said Shaikh Mishal.
“They will also enhance traffic flow, increase road capacity and improve infrastructure.”
The first project involved the development of Muhazwarah Avenue, Avenue 37 and Hajiyat Road.
Muhazwarah Avenue was widened from two lanes to three, which is expected to increase the road’s capacity from 3,200 vehicles per hour to 4,800.
The second project focused on expanding Avenue 37 along with an intersection with Muhazwarah Avenue. Additionally, a 970-metre long third lane was added along Muhazwarah Avenue, between National Charter Highway and Road 3933.
Intersections such as the one between Roads 3701 and 3710 were also upgraded.
A third project, currently under implementation, includes upgrading Hajiyat Road and the roundabout at the intersection with Jeddah Road.
This is expected to increase the carrying capacity of the roundabout from 800 vehicles per hour to 1,500.
Additional upgrades involved in all three projects include reconstruction of roads, improvement of street lighting and installation of speed bumps and road signs to guide traffic and facilitate movement.
