A call has gone out for an open debate on the performance of the Sunni and Jaffari Waqf (Endowments) Directorates.
The proposal by 10 MPs, led by Strategic Thinking Bloc member Abdulla Al Romaihi, will be voted on during the weekly session on Tuesday.
According to them, the debate would focus on strategies and procedures for investments and development of the Endowments. It also aims to look into funds and savings for, and from, religious coffers, besides collecting ongoing and due payments.
The proposed debate will address maintenance of worship places as well as issues related to employment and promotion policies.
Meanwhile, Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Nawaf Al Maawda will be present during the weekly session to further respond to questions by three MPs on religious affairs.
“There are 21 mosques in Capital Governorate constituency one, out of which 17 don’t need extensive maintenance. Three are in need of maintenance with budget for two allocated this year. One mosque is in need of demolition and reconstruction,” said Mr Al Maawada in a written response to area MP Mohammed Hussain Janahi.
He also revealed that 13 locations have been earmarked for worship places in the new East Sitra Housing Town.
“Artist impressions for two mosques and a ma’atam have been completed and are in the process of getting relevant approvals for work in the first phase,” said Mr Al Maawada.
“The second phase will include two mosques, one of which will be the largest in the town, and consultants have been directed to work on the necessary designs.”
Also set for debate and a vote during the session is a proposal seeking full time employment for Bahrainis on temporary contracts in the two endowments’ directorates, and the Information Affairs and Health Ministries. It has been presented by MP Zainab Abdulamir.
Health Minister Dr Jalila Al Sayyed said full employment is granted for Bahraini medics whenever requirements are completed.
Information Affairs Minister Dr Ramzan Al Nuaimi said no Bahrainis were employed part-time at the ministry.
Acting Labour Minister and Legal Affairs Minister Yousif Khalaf said there were no Bahrainis on temporary or part-time contracts under the Civil Service Commission.
A proposal obliging easier bank facilities for Bahrainis in the private sector, presented by five MPs led by services committee chairwoman MP Jalila Al Sayed, is also set for debate.
Legislators will vote on a proposal by services committee vice-chairman Mohammed Al Olaiwi to build a multi-purpose hall in Muharraq Al Kubra (Grand) Garden.
