A notorious criminal, who was sentenced to life in prison last month for ramming a policeman with a car, has lodged an appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court.
The 48-year-old Bahraini man was earlier sentenced by the High Criminal Court to 25 years in jail for leaving the officer with a five per cent permanent disability as well as assaulting two other policemen.
According to court records, the appellant has a history of convictions including armed robbery, rape, fraud, soliciting prostitution, drug use and assault.
In the latest case, the police officer suffered from a broken left leg and multiple fractures following the attack, and needed to undergo an operation to place screws and pins to rectify the fractures.
The incident took place in July last year, when the three policemen were sent to the appellant’s Salihiya home to arrest him on suspicion of selling methamphetamine.
Upon seeing them, the ne’er-do-well jumped into a car and suddenly reversed it, ramming into the patrol vehicle and hitting the Bahraini officer who was in the way.
He also reportedly brandished a razor blade at the two other policemen who apprehended them, but he was ultimately subdued and arrested.
Judges had sentenced the man to life in prison in view of his criminal record, which acted as an aggravating circumstance in the case.
He had previously been sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbery and 13 years for attacking and stealing from a female victim. It was also not his first time evading arrest, nor his first time assaulting policemen.
The case was adjourned to February 23, when the three policemen will be summoned before the court to testify in the case.
