A 34-year-old man from the Indian state of West Bengal was sentenced to death on Tuesday for kidnapping and raping a seven-month-old girl from north Kolkata in November 2024.
The child is currently in critical condition in the ICU of a state-run hospital, where she has already undergone four surgical procedures.
Bivas Chatterjee, special public prosecutor, said, "The court had held the man Rajib Ghosh guilty of rape on Monday. On Tuesday, while stating that the case fits into the rarest of the rare crime bracket, the court sentenced him to death."
Local residents told the police that they had found the child naked, bleeding and crying outside a temple on December 1. The police were notified, and after a medical examination, it was determined that she had been raped.
"The accused raped and tortured her for 30 minutes in the intervening night of November 30 and December 1 after picking her up from the footpath where she was sleeping with her parents. Later, he dumped her near a temple in a naked condition," said an officer.
Judge Indrila Mukherjee Mitra said, "There cannot be any other punishment that the court can think of."
The sentencing comes within 80 days of the crime. The court also compensated the baby with Rs 10 lakh (BD4,300).
