Legislators have unanimously approved an urgent proposal to provide financial support to societies that have significantly contributed to the progress of women in the country.
The proposal, spearheaded by five MPs led by Lulwa Al Romaihi, will now be referred to the Cabinet for review and implementation.
Ms Al Romaihi highlighted the critical role played by women’s societies in offering support services and advancing gender equality in Bahrain.
She warned that many of them were now struggling financially and lacked stable headquarters to continue their work effectively.
“Societies that have helped women throughout decades are facing difficulties meeting their expenses or don’t have permanent headquarters to work from,” Ms Al Romaihi said during the weekly Parliament session yesterday.
She claimed that without immediate government intervention, many of these organisations may have to close down, which ‘would be a major setback for women’s development in the country’.
The proposal calls for financial assistance to help these societies cover operational costs, as well as logistical backing to ensure their sustainability.
“Women’s societies have been the backbone of our efforts to empower Bahraini women in all aspects of life,” Ms Al Romaihi said.
“They have been instrumental in promoting education, employment and leadership opportunities for women. Their work has led to tangible progress and it is our duty to ensure they continue their mission without financial constraints,” she added.
“We trust the government will take immediate action to provide the necessary support. This is a matter of national interest as empowering women directly contributes to the development of our society.”
The proposal received overwhelming support from MPs, both men and women.
Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam said the unanimous approval sends a strong message about the importance of women’s organisations and their contributions.
“This is not just about funding; it’s about recognising the decades of work these societies have put in to uplift Bahraini women,” he said. “Supporting them is an investment in our country’s future.”
