The World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday concluded an evaluation visit to Muharraq within the framework of its procedural assessment to approve it as part of the ‘Healthy Cities’ programme, our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej reported.
Muharraq Governor Salman Bin Hindi reviewed the governorate’s efforts since its application to the programme, citing the compilation of strategic and operational plans, the organisation of training workshops, and the initiation of social activities and field visits to raise awareness of the programme.
Mr Bin Hindi affirmed Muharraq’s keenness to achieve its vision of recognising it as a pioneering healthy governorate by focusing on improving the health environment and optimising the quality of life for citizens and residents.
WHO expert Samar El Feky toured many facilities in Muharraq, including green areas, health and social centres, as well as civil society institutions, to evaluate the applied standards and their compatibility with the ‘Health Cities’ programme’s requirements.
She commended the governorate’s efforts in applying the required standards, which reflects Bahrain’s commitment to promoting public health and achieving sustainable development.
Health Minister Dr Jalila Al Sayyed met WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and discussed with him co-operation in the health field.
She praised his visit to Bahrain, which reflects strong relations between the kingdom and WHO and mutual keenness to enhance co-operation.
Dr Ghebreyesus commended Bahrain’s strides in the health sector, praising its steady efforts to promote the healthcare quality and innovation.
Supreme Council for Health (SCH) Chairman Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa also met the WHO director-general. He underscored the kingdom’s keenness, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to provide the best health services and cope with the latest medical and therapeutic advancements.
Lt Gen Dr Shaikh Mohammed underlined the kingdom’s interest in strengthening joint co-ordination, commending the organisation’s efforts in this regard.
Dr Ghebreyesus praised the kingdom’s initiatives to foster the right for health, ensure overarching health coverage, and address diverse challenges. He also praised Bahrain’s achievements in developing its health infrastructure and harnessing all the needed resources for it.
