The latest developments and scientific findings related to obesity, surgical intervention, medications and other treatments will be discussed at a conference set to be held in the kingdom later this year, writes Maliha Obaid.
The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) is organising the ‘Tackling the Obesity Epidemic: Insights for a Healthier Future’ event, which will take place at the Crowne Plaza Bahrain’s Conference Centre, in Manama, from May 8 to 9.
It is being held under the patronage of Supreme Council for Health (SCH) chairman Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.
The two-day conference will address global challenges related to the obesity epidemic, as well as review the latest scientific developments and practical solutions for weight management and obesity prevention.
A number of doctors, experts, researchers and policymakers from around the world are expected to highlight their latest research and successful practices in health and nutrition.
“The university actively contributes to enhancing medical knowledge and facilitating the exchange of expertise among health professionals, reflecting its commitment to the development of the medical sector in the region,” Lt Gen Dr Shaikh Mohammed said in a statement.
“These conferences offer an important opportunity for scientists and doctors to exchange ideas and innovations that can enhance the quality of healthcare and facilitate sustainable progress in this vital sector.”
AGU president Dr Saad Al Fuhaid revealed that the two-day conference would showcase the latest evidence-based guidelines concerning medications and interventional procedures for obesity treatment.
He highlighted that several interactive workshops will cover a range of topics such as discussing the role of technology in weight management, national strategies in GCC countries to combat obesity, the psychological and social factors in promoting a healthy lifestyle and the pathophysiology of obesity, along with its related genetics.
In addition, chronic health conditions associated with obesity, such as diabetes, dyslipidaemia, heart and liver diseases, mental health disorders and cancer would also be addressed, as well as obesity and women’s health, the latest updates related to surgical interventions for morbid obesity.
Participants will also have the opportunity to share experiences from various medical specialties during joint discussion sessions to examine the complications of the disease on different major body systems.
Physicians, nutrition specialists, researchers and medical and health sciences students are expected to attend.
In conjunction with the conference, three workshops will be held focusing on nutrition for obese patients and strategies for their management, the role of primary healthcare in addressing this condition and a workshop on acquiring essential surgical skills, as well as the use of endoscopy.
