His Majesty King Hamad arrived in Cairo yesterday on an official visit to take part in the Emergency Arab Summit convening today.
The King, the current President of the Arab Summit, will lead Bahrain’s delegation at the event, which will discuss developments related to the Palestinian cause.
His Majesty expressed appreciation to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi for hosting the key meeting.
He emphasised that the summit is being held at ‘a highly critical and sensitive time’, requiring continued consultation and co-ordination among Arab leaders to address challenges threatening Arab security and the interests of their nations and peoples.
He reiterated the firm Arab stance on safeguarding national security, supporting just causes, particularly the Palestinian cause, and defending the Palestinian people’s rights to freedom, justice, dignity, and the establishment of their fully sovereign independent state.
He also underscored the importance of advancing efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace for the benefit of all peoples in the region.
The King wished the Arab nations all success in their endeavours to enhance the well-being of their people and fulfil their aspirations for peace, security, stability and development.
He also underscored that the summit’s convening in Egypt highlighted its pivotal role and efforts to strengthen Arab solidarity and unity.
Earlier upon arrival at Cairo International Airport, His Majesty was received by Egyptian Health and Population Minister Dr Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and Bahrain’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League Fouzia Zainal.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan, which ensures Palestinians remain in their land, is ready and will be presented at the Arab summit today, GDN reported yesterday.
Last month, US President Donald Trump proposed to “take over” Gaza and resettle its population to develop it into a tourist destination, an idea vehemently rejected by the Arab world and many other nations, who say it amounts to ethnic cleansing.
Mr Abdelatty said Egypt would seek international backing and funding for its plan and emphasised Europe’s crucial role, particularly in financing Gaza’s reconstruction.
“We will hold intensive talks with major donor countries once the plan is adopted at the upcoming Arab Summit,” he said at a Press conference with the EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica.
Mr Abdelatty said after today’s summit, foreign ministers of member states of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation would hold an urgent meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss how to present the plans.
