Kannada actress Ranya Rao, travelling from Dubai to Bengaluru, was caught by customs with 14.8 kilograms of gold found in her possession.
The authorities had been intensely monitoring the actress over suspicions regarding her increasingly frequent visits to the GCC.
According to reports, she travelled more than 10 times internationally this year, and in the past 15 days alone, she flew to Dubai four times! Consequently, DRI officials were waiting at the airport upon her arrival for observation.
On Monday night, as the actress arrived, security discovered 14kg of gold bars hidden inside her belt and 800 grams of gold jewellery. She was arrested immediately.
She claimed she was the daughter of a ‘top police officer,’ and attempted to contact the local police for help.
On Tuesday evening, a judge remanded her to a 14-day judicial custody.
The 33-year-old is the daughter of a well-known public figure, K Ramachandra Rao, a top police officer who serves as Karnataka’s DGP.
According to reports, Mr Rao has distanced himself from his daughter's case, saying that “she has let us down. If she has done anything wrong, the law will take its course.”
