A woman who allegedly assaulted policemen on duty by kicking and slapping them is standing trial at the High Criminal Court.
The 35-year-old Saudi national has also been charged with insulting public security personnel and inflicting them bodily harm.
According to court documents, an Interior Ministry officer who was patrolling the city on February 1 received a report on two women breaking out into a fight on the side of a road.
He rushed to the area and while it was unclear what triggered the brawl, he tried to talk to the women, only to be assaulted by one of them in a fit of rage.
“I asked a security guard standing nearby if he knew what sparked the fight, however, he didn’t know much and then I went up to the woman in order to question her, only for her to suddenly assault me and slap me. I had to immediately ask for a back-up,” the 40-year-old told the court.
Another policeman who received report on the alleged attack went to the area and saw his colleague confronting the expat woman, who continued to behave in an unruly manner.
“I went up to her and asked her if she had assaulted the officer, and she admitted that she did,” the 31-year-old told the court.
“We then contacted the Women’s Police and sought their help to tackle the situation,” he added.
The officers tried to calm down the Saudi woman who allegedly continued to scream at them and abuse them.
She also brandished her phone and threatened to record the policemen, claiming that she was ‘very famous’ on social media and had ‘a lot of followers’.
The 31-year-old officer said he attempted to pacify her, but the accused persisted on verbally abusing him and kicking him.
He asked the other officer to help subdue her until the Women’s Police arrived, and a tussle ensued.
The 40-year-old officer said he had to use pepper spray on the woman, after which she fell to the ground and claimed that she felt ‘distressed and exhausted’.
“She also claimed that she was suffering from heart issues,” he said.
“We immediately administered urgent first aid and contacted the National Ambulance Service for help,” he added.
According to court documents, while the ambulance was on the way, the woman once again began screaming and insulting the officers, saying that she was going to file a complaint against them.
She was then taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex, where she was treated for her illness, the severity of which was not specified in the court documents.
The Public Prosecution launched an investigation after which they referred her for trial at the High Criminal Court.
The case has been adjourned until Monday for further deliberation.
