Campaigns against begging have been intensified during Ramadan, the authorities announced.
The Muharraq Governorate Police Directorate said yesterday that begging had ‘negative effects’ on society and may also be considered a cover for crimes, such as theft, sexual harassment and exploitation of children.
“It is considered as a means of earning money without effort,” it added.
Begging is prohibited in Bahrain by law but concerns have been raised that those seeking alms are taking advantage of people’s kindness and good hearts during the holy month.
There have also been claims of begging rackets in which con artists dupe people with fake sob stories.
