The British Embassy is working to assist a Royal Navy sailor, who has been jailed for 12 weeks in Bahrain for his involvement in a street brawl.
Owen Haggerty, 22, from Renfrewshire, Scotland, is set to spend three months at Al Hidd Prison, after a judge found him guilty of physical assault.
“Our consular team is providing assistance to a British national currently detained in Bahrain,” the British Embassy told the GDN, in response to a query about Mr Haggerty.
According to online reports, Mr Haggerty was due to travel back home the day after the brawl occurred, after spending four months on duty at the UK Maritime Component Command base in Bahrain.
His mother Kirsty Reynolds told Scotland-based STV News that her son claims to have been trying to stop the brawl and ‘calm down a situation that got out of hand’.
A spokesperson from the Royal Navy noted: “The welfare of our people is a top priority which is why we are continuing to support a member of the Royal Navy detained in Bahrain as well as his family.
“We are working with the British Embassy in Bahrain and in regular contact with Bahrain’s law enforcement authorities.
“Regular visits have been made to the individual by the chain of command, colleagues and consular officials to provide support.”
