A number of prisoners pardoned by His Majesty King Hamad on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr, expressed their gratitude to him, stating that this would be an opportunity to start a new life and contribute to building the country.
Their families praised the wisdom of His Majesty and said that they were pleased to receive the news that they would be reunited with their sons again, and that they would have a chance to start a new page in their lives.
The royal pardons have also been praised by Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam and Shura Council Chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh.
Mr Al Musallam commended the royal decree pardoning 630 inmates, including individuals who served part of their sentences and others under alternative sentencing.
He described it as a reflection of His Majesty’s humanitarian approach and commitment to upholding justice, reinforcing the rule of law and enabling those pardoned to reintegrate into society and contribute to national development.
Mr Al Musallam expressed appreciation for the efforts of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in supporting the royal vision, enhancing stability, enforcing the law and promoting values of cohesion and tolerance.
Mr Al Saleh described the pardon as a continuation of His Majesty’s humanitarian approach and commitment to fostering tolerance and advancing national and social development.
He added that the initiative reflects Bahrain’s advanced human rights record and enhances its regional and international standing.
General Directorate of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing director general Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa expressed appreciation for the royal decree pardoning a number of inmates, including several beneficiaries of the alternative sentencing and open prisons programmes.
In line with the royal directives to expand the implementation of the Alternative Sentencing Law, the General Directorate, following co-ordination with the Public Prosecution and the approval of the sentencing enforcement judge, replaced the sentences of 266 individuals who met the legal requirements for eligibility. Additionally, 55 inmates were admitted into the first phase of the open prisons programme.
This brings the total number of beneficiaries since the law’s introduction in 2018 to 8,278.
Many MPs, lawyers and human rights activists and organisations praised the royal pardon, saying that this is a usual custom of His Majesty on every Eid or national celebration so that joy can be shared by everyone.
