Visiting the BSPCA Animal Welfare Centre in Askar is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by the excited barks of dogs eager for a walk and the curious eyes of cats hoping for a gentle touch.
I signed in at the reception, and after a quick briefing, I was introduced to a few of the shelter’s residents.
Walking the dogs with my husband and toddler in tow was an absolute joy; the pooches were so eager to stretch their legs and explore the surroundings. Some were playful, bounding with energy, while others were a little more timid, needing extra patience and reassurance.
After the walk, I spent time in the cat area, where dozens of affectionate felines lounged in the shade or curled up in cosy beds.
Grooming them was incredibly therapeutic; not just for them, but for me too.
A giant ginger cat named Keith purred the moment I ran a brush over his fur, leaning into every stroke.

What made the visit even more special was seeing families bring their children along. Watching kids learn how to handle animals gently, understand their needs and show them kindness was heartwarming. It’s such a fantastic way to teach compassion and responsibility.
The BSPCA is always in need of volunteers and giving just a few hours of your time makes a huge difference in these animals’ lives. Plus, if you’re thinking of adopting, visiting is a great way to meet potential new furry family members.
I left with a full heart and I know I’ll be back again soon.
