More than 1.4 million traffic-related transactions were processed last year as part of initiatives to develop government services, the General Directorate of Traffic has said.
Director-general of traffic Major General Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulwahab Al Khalifa said the directorate was working on improving its mechanisms and would co-ordinate with relevant government authorities to give the people of Bahrain the best possible service.
“In 2024, the directorate successfully processed more than 1.4m transactions,” said Maj Gen Shaikh Abdulrahman.
“This comes as part of the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to support and develop government programmes and initiatives.
“With the support of Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, we were able to build an efficient traffic system, enhance the services and facilitate the processing of applications in real time.”
According to figures provided, a vast majority of the transactions (about 81.1 per cent), were done online using e-services and electronic platforms.
Maj Gen Shaikh Abdulrahman stressed that the development process was ongoing with an electronic linkage project with other GCC countries underway.
In the coming years, new e-services are also expected to be introduced as the country keeps pace with technological developments worldwide.
He also stated that the directorate is looking to increase co-operation with the private sector to launch facilities, including opening new sites for technical inspections. So far, the number of centres licensed to provide technical inspection services for vehicles has reached 12.
Additionally campaigns and initiatives aimed at enforcing the law and raising traffic safety rates contributed to a 27 per cent drop in violations last year.
Community partnerships with various sectors have significantly enhanced traffic culture and awareness among citizens and residents.
Last year, more than 33,000 students in the kingdom are estimated to have benefited from such partnerships and school programmes, where more than 1,680 media materials were distributed.
Maj Gen Shaikh Abdulrahman highlighted the directorate’s dedication to applying modern technology in providing traffic services.
“This will facilitate and speed up procedures and enhance transparency and efficiency in providing services,” he said.
“Such an approach comes within the framework of continuous efforts to improve the quality of government services and enhance digital innovation, which will strengthen the national economy and support the kingdom’s regional and international competitiveness.”
