A proposal to reduce the voting age from 20 to 18, starting with the 2026 parliamentary and municipal elections, could be suspended indefinitely.
The Shura Council is set to vote, during its weekly session on Sunday, on a request for indefinite suspension by the five members behind it.
The move is originally led by legislative and legal affairs committee chairwoman Dalal Al Zayed.
The proposal sought to amend key legislation – the 2002 Political Rights Law, the 2002 Municipal Councils’ Elections Law and the 2001 Municipal Law – to give younger Bahrainis the right to vote and shape the kingdom’s political future.
In 2006, the Shura Council successfully pushed to lower the voting age from 21 to 20 – a move that was endorsed by Parliament and ratified by His Majesty King Hamad.
