A Sri Lankan national stranded in Bahrain for more than 20 years was repatriated along with her son, after suffering from diabetes-related complications.
Kadeeja Aslam, 47, who was admitted to Salmaniya Medical Complex in January for breathing problems, had been living in the kingdom without valid documentation.
Her 18-year-old son Rafik Katheed Mohamed, who was born at SMC in 2007, also lacked proper documentation and did not have a birth certificate or a passport.
The Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC) Bahrain worked to resolve their case in co-ordination with the Sri Lanka Embassy, Bahrain’s immigration department, a network of community groups and hospital authorities, who issued a special certificate to Mr Mohamed confirming his delivery date.
They returned to their home country on April 17, accompanied by a medical escort due to Ms Aslam’s health condition.
She expressed sincere thanks to the Sri Lankan Embassy and other groups that helped her and her son’s repatriation.
