Bahrain regularly reviews business activities in the country in co-ordination with the regulatory authorities to maintain its high business-friendly standing in the global market, a government minister has said.
Industry and Commerce Minister Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro said that the ministry closely monitors compliance with laws and regulations to ensure fair competition.
He revealed, in a reply to a parliamentary question, that the total number of active commercial registrations (CRs) in Bahrain reached 88,200 as of February 16, including all CR categories such as sole proprietorships and all types of companies.
Bahrainis contributed 52 per cent of the capital of these companies and non-Bahrainis 48pc, the minister said.
The top five business activities that non-Bahrainis invest in are management consultancy, internal décor, advertising, marketing and promotional activities and real estate, whether owned or rented.
Mr Fakhro said that the ministry closely monitors compliance and a number of CRs were investigated, of which 197 cover-up cases were referred to the Public Prosecution to regularise their legal statuses.
Some CRs were cancelled and outlets and offices closed.
The minister said a number of cases were still being looked into by the courts.
