An event aimed at inspiring youngsters to read more books and engage in intellectual conversations kicks off today at the Alumni Club in Adliya.
‘Bahrain Reads’ will be held for the first time, from April 22 to 27, in collaboration with the Bahrain Library and Information Association.
It coincides with World Book and Copyright Day, marked tomorrow – the date when prominent authors, including William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died.
Every year, celebrations take place all over the world to recognise the importance of books as a link between the past and the future.
“A rich and diverse programme has been organised to attract readers, families, students and book enthusiasts,” Alumni Club Library and Isa Bin Salman Cultural Hall manager Dr Dina Fakhrawi told the GDN.
“The Education Ministry has also invited children from both public and private schools, in an effort to encourage young people to interact with one another through books, intellectual topics and fun activities that may inspire a love for reading.
“The event aims to bring together a wide network of cultural and educational institutions to unite in a mission to foster the culture of reading, elevating the kingdom’s position as a regional hub for intellectual exchange.
“Visitors can enjoy book exhibitions, featuring around 10 Bahraini bookstores, alongside interactive workshops, panel discussions and seminars, delivered by local authors, academics and local leaders.”
The book Dr Ali Fakhro A Pioneer of Thought and Reform by author Dr Hisham Al Shaikh will be released today at the event’s opening by Shura Council chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh.
It honours the legacy of Dr Fakhro, a renowned Bahraini intellectual, public servant and national figure, whose contributions have shaped the kingdom’s educational and health landscape.
“Books and genres, from kindergarten to advanced levels, will be available at the event in both English and Arabic,” she said.
“A dedicated children’s zone offering educational and creative activities aim to inspire young readers to explore the world of books in fun and engaging ways.
“We are seeing a decline in the number of children and young people reading, so we want to create interesting spaces that not only encourage reading, but also inspire people to take part in engaging, thought-provoking conversations.”
Throughout the week, the event will host additional book launches, meet-and-greet with authors, reading sessions and cultural competitions.
Admission is free and open to all.
The event will be held from 8am to 8pm, until April 27 at the Isa bin Salman Cultural Hall, Alumni Club, Adliya.
